Congratulations on the launch of “Awakening,” a poetry film inspired by the public art in Mississauga!

“Awakening”, a poetry film inspired by public art in Mississauga now has been released. The short film was produced and directed by Anna Yin with her film crew members Sarah Hei and Roy Marques. The film covers more than 10 pieces of public art in Mississauga and reveals the city’s unique history and culture with beautiful natural scenes. This project won a 2023 Micro Matchmaker grant from Mississauga Arts Council and was supported by local art groups and businesses. Here is the film link for you to enjoy:

In Don Gutteridge’s Starlight Tapestry, Anna Yin presents a superb group of poems full of ripe
wisdom from a poet who has played a central role in Canadian literature for more than fifty
years. And she contributes to Chinese poetry with her translations of Gutteridge’s work and
vision. Gutteridge is a poet of “the loving lustre of our life / together”. His is a world that is
“always / a burled beginning, all feel / and sense and tendrill’d touch.” The poet’s veneration for
all good things that he encounters is vividly displayed in this collection.

Don Gutteridge is a Canadian author of 70 books: fiction, poetry and scholarly works; one of his poetry books was a finalist for Governor General’s Literary Awards in 1973. He taught at Western University in the Department of English Methods. He is now professor emeritus and lives in London, Ontario.

Anna Yin was Mississauga’s Inaugural Poet Laureate (2015-2017) and has authored five poetry collections and a book of translations: “Mirrors and Windows”(Guernica Editions). Public Art and Poetry Film Project of Mississauga kick-off

Mississauga is home to Indigenous peoples and diverse ethnic groups. Public art is vital to connect communities and showcase cultural identities. When I was Mississauga’s inaugural poet laureate, I envisioned a project that would link poetry and public art in a collaborative film. In March 2023, I wrote a poem “Reflecting on Public Art in Mississauga” inspired by this idea and submitted it with my film project, together these won MAC’s 2023 spring Matchmaker MicroGrant.

Now we are ready to begin our project and plan to finish a film based on it in Oct, 2023. We would like to invite you to participate in our upcoming film-making activities. Click the link to read the poem!

We also want to extend our congratulations on the publication of Don’s new poetry collection, “Starlight Tapestry,” with Anna Yin’s translations! Anna brought copies of the book to the Mitchell Poetry Festival in Ontario on June 17, 2023 and donated one to the library.

Anna Yin will start her project in June 2023: Creating a reflective film to foster cultural values
Project that fuses poetry and public art in a collaborative film. She will team with Roy Marques, Sarah Hei and other artists/participants for this short film project. She thanks MAC, AGM, Triple J Canada, Kaideed Education and other sponsors!

This project will start in June teamed up with a core film team and plan to finish in Oct, 2023. During the filming process, Anna will invite the public to join us with activities (more will be released) to enrich connections with our city and our communities to further understand the role of public art in the history and cultural development of Mississauga. Currently we have received wonderful supports from local artists and sponsors (Anna’s sponsors from last year will continue their sponsorship).

Anna Yin introducing LuoFu’s poems and poetry festival to Vancouver and then Canadian poets’ work to Taiwan

Former Vancouver poet Luo Fu will be celebrated posthumously by the writers group that he founded

Epoch Poetry Quarterly (Taiwan) has more than 60 years history. Luo Fu was one of the founders and was a renown Chinese poet in the world. Anna has translated his poems in Mirrors and Windows (Guernica Editions 2021) Epoch Poetry Quarterly #215 published Anna Yin’s translations of poems by three Canadian poets: Liz Howard, Don Gutteridge, Armand Garnet Ruffo (in both original text and translations)
