Yin is endlessly perspicacious, endlessly compelling… She brings to Canadian poetry a sense of classicism and aestheticism and minimalism, all nicely mixed up with sensuality.
—George Elliott Clarke, 7th Parliamentary Poet Laureate of Canada

Anna Yin’s poems give us beauty in all its delicacy and its strength—a full glowing presence that sometimes, mysteriously, is just a fleeting hint, a dance of shadows….This is an original poet following her intuition ever deeper into the secrets of emotion and reality.
—A. F. Moritz, 6th Toronto Poet Laureate, 2009 Griffin Poetry Prize Winner.

Thanks Dr Vivekanand Jha for taking three years to produce this Universal Oneness Poetry Anthology. It includes 360 poems by 360 poets from 60 countries. So glad to have my poem in it. I also saw other Canadian poets there…with good company…Will take time to read them all. Congrats to all of us.

Chinese translation for IN FLANDERS FIELDS POEM

Anna Yin was invited to read In Flanders Fields in Chinese on Nov 9, 2019 in Toronto. so she translated the poem into Chinese.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS POEM
By Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!

Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields

在排排十字架之间,成列又成行;

I Love This Land
by AiQing

If I were a bird,
I would sing with my hoarse voice
Of this storm-buffeted land,
Of this grief-turbulent river,
Of these unceasing-raging winds,
And of the touchingly-tender forest dawn
——Then I would die,
even my feathers would decay in the soil.
Why are my eyes always with tears?
Because I love this land deeply…

Prayer
Yu Guang Zhong

Please place a kiss on my hair
so I needn’t wear a vain crown.
Please press a kiss in my hand
so I needn’t wear a shiny ring.

Please gently kiss my eyes,
kiss away lonely tears.
Please tenderly kiss my chest,
kiss it free of knots.

On chilly starry midnights,
I long for your warm kiss.
It should cover my cold lips,
so I won’t sing of worldly gloom.

Youth
Xi Murong

All the ending has been written
All the tears have already flowed
Yet suddenly I forget how it began
In that ancient summer which no longer returns
No matter how hard I search,
the youthful self only passes by like a cloud’s shadow
Pale and vague, your smiling face
gradually disappears
in the sunset behind hills
I then open the faded title page
by fate’s binding botched.
Tears in my eyes, I read it again and again-
having to admit
Youth is such a swift book

The Lantern Festival Night – to the tune of Green Jade Table

by Xin Qiji

The east wind adorns a thousand trees with flowers at night,
and blows down stars in showers.
Fine steeds and carved carriages spread scent along the way,
Phoenix-cooing flutes resounding,
Jade-urn-shaped lanterns revolving,
Fish and dragons dance all night.

In a gold-thread dress, butterfly-light and willow-white,
Giggling, she goes with floating faint fragrance.
But in the crowd once and again
I look for her in vain.
When all at once I turn my head,
I find her there where lantern light is dimly shed.

White Moon

Wang Xiaoni

The midnight moon exposes every bone.

I breathe ice-blue air.

All the world’s follies

are falling like fireflies.

The city is a carcass.

No living thing

can match this pure light.

I open the curtains to watch earth

hold such pouring silver

until I forget I’m human.

Life’s last act

is silently rehearsed under a bleak spotlight.

The moon lands on my floor

to reveal my blanched feet.

GIVE IT BACK TO ME

Even if you have eaten it, give me the bones back please
Please give me back the shepherd’s song halfway up the hill
Even if you have recorded it on tape
Give me back the flute please
Give it back to me
Please give me back the space of love
Even if you have polluted it
Please give me back the right of environmental protection
Give me back the relationship with my brothers and sisters
Even if it lasts no more than half a year, give it back, please
Give me back the whole of the globe
Even if it has been divided into
Thousands of nations
Hundred thousands of villages
Please give it back to me

AMSTERDAM’S RIVERS
a city at nightfall in November,
nothing but Amsterdam’s rivers
but look
the orange on the tree back home
is swaying in the autumn winds
I close the window, still no use
the rivers flow backwards, still no use
the pearl-embedded sun has risen
still no use
pigeons flutter as iron ashes
streets without boys suddenly seem empty
after the autumn rain
that roof, crawling with snails all over,
– my mother land
slowly sailing away on Amsterdam’s rivers…

Window by the Sea
By: Janice Zhang
2017-08-10

I want to escape from ordinary life
And fly like the seagulls
They free their mind and soar
While the stars shine so bright

So what if I can’t flee?
Then, watch the tide and the heaven collide
Through my window by the sea

I , can always daydream
——— of you

And this gave us opportunities to co-create the following:

I want to escape from this ordinary life
And fly afar like the seagulls.
From dawn to night they soar
While the stars shine so bright.

But what if I can’t flee?
Through my window by the sea
I watch tide and heaven collide

And no one can stop
my daydream

of you

Love Haiku Poems
By: Janice Zhang

Holding my breath
Alone in a snowy night
I wait for the sound of key turn

————————–

Moon river –
When fingers are swimming
On a woman’s skin

————————–

The moon is asleep
The cricket sound faded
Pounding heartbeats

Suggested to revise and Co-created as the following:

holding breath
alone on a snowy night
I wait for the key to turn

————————–

moon river –
fingers sliding
the curve of her skin
————————–

a dozing moon
cricket songs fade
pounding heartbeats

Niagara Great Falls
8—line poem with 7 characters

Divided America and Canada in two sides,
Tumbling like oceans and rivers, loud as passing strong cavalry like,
Huge curtain falls down joining two countries,
Rainbow strings flowing clouds high in the sky.
Falling tens of thousand years never stop,
Group Great Lakes together of five.
Number one in the world since history,
Every one knows you under the sky.

Suggested to revise and Co-created as the following:

Dividing America and Canada making two sides,
Tumbling as ocean, loud as a passing cavalry,
Huge curtain cascades down joining two countries,
Rainbow bridge tossing clouds high in the sky.
Falling tens of thousands of years, never stopping,
Five Great Lakes rolling and connected together.
Number one in the world in history,
Who does not know you under the sky?

The Flute In the Wind and the Traveler by Anna Yin

The flute in my case could not wait any more,
she popped up and rolled out into an open field.
Lying among daisies, she sang the wind’s whispers
and mirrored the moonlight’s glimmer.

A traveler stopped for her song.
He bent down and picked her up.
Feeling her coldness, he cupped her in his hands.
Her song paused, yet her skin’s color returned.

For a moment, she felt his fingers melt her,
and vibrated when he put lips closer.
And I wanted to know what happened next,
but could not, as I, the case, was left behind.

A Compass Rose by Anna Yin

MEMORY by Sajeda Manzoor

Thoughts wander
Time surrenders
Sometimes it haunts
Childhood memories

The past whispers
It is the cycle of life
The caterpillar becomes a butterfly

She waits for the sunshine
When it touches her soft body
She turns into a butterfly

Flapping her wings and toward the sky
She flies high and high
Among flowers she sings and wanders
She enjoys her new-born wings

She thanks to thy Lord
I am no more a wiggly thing
I am a colourful butterfly
I can fly high above the sky.
